Bought this for the workspace so that coworkers that were intrested in the hobby could learn. Its a good looking piece. The seller also refunded me when my first one came cracked..Small is nice for a desktop aquarium but not the best for a marine aquarium especially if you want more than 1 fish. Some would argue that you shouldnt keep any, but for now we have just the clowngoby..The open lid design is not the best idea for gobys and other fish prone to jumping but those also tend to be the smaller group of fish that are suiteable for the 5g. Serious design flaw for that reason and evaporation. A half inch of water evap can swing the salinity from 32-36 in less than a week..Filtration is also subpar. It has a fairly weak but suffcient pump that is SILENT. The compact design of the 5g does make it hard to fit a heater in the pump chamber FYI. The overflow does an AWFUL job of skimming the surface of the water. Fluval designed the main filter chamber to have overflow grates at the top that makes the water flow through a sponge filter with some carbon packs and biologoc filter media that it came with but also a small hole at the bottom below all this media to prevent running the pump dry in case your water level gets too low. I feel that fluid follows least resistance and most of the water goes into the smaller hole, bypassing filter media, and straight back to the pump..If youre deadset on the fluval get the 13.5g. U can get more fish, the lid seams atleast partially sealed which will help with evaporation, jumping fish, etc. U can always upgrade the filtration in the back later. Intank makes great filter baskets to replace stock filtration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great all in one, very limited use.
Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2020
I bought this to set up in my classroom at school as a small reef tank. The light is good enough for some corals, but I upgraded the light for personal preference.

It’s a great all in one, but could use some modifications. The pump is not very strong, so the flow is very low. It needs to be more to be able to grow many corals. Zoas and mushrooms are probably the best for this tank. Mine is a mushroom only tank.

It’s really too small for any fish. Even if it does recommend some. Mostly just snails and hermits could survive in this.

If you are limited on space and just need and want a small tank without fish this is perfect. It has potential to be a good and fun tank, but I would get something bigger than the 5 gallon one if you have the space. A lot more potential.

5.0 out of 5 stars I absolutely love this tank
Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2017
I absolutely love this tank! I upgraded to this tank from a Marineland Portrait 5g, which had a smaller footprint but more vertical height. The Evo has the same capacity but seems like a much bigger tank than the Portrait. Having a long narrow profile gives my fish a whole lot more room to zip around and be happy. Also there is more floor space to spread out the live rock and create a cool scape.

The stock pump is high quality but opted to use it in the tank to circulate water. I put it opposite the return pump and it creates awesome flow. Even better is it is much less intrusive and noticeable than a powerhead and it was essentially free!

I used an Aquatop Np302 and the tubing from the Portrait as my return pump. The Aquatop is under the media basket sitting on its side (The sponge media holder doesn't sit all the way down on the shelf but thats not a problem) and the hose snakes under the divider and up to the outlet. This way the big tetra 50w heater I have fits in the return pump compartment with no problem. I originally wanted to get the Aqueon 600 but its a little more pricey than other small pumps and I would've had to get a new heater too because that pump and heater combo wouldn't fit in the back together.

Not a fan of the filtration sponge. I had some leftover aquarium silicon from plugging the two holes in the back and some thin plexiglass and made an in tank basket which was pretty easy but well have to see how well it works. Still waiting for the silicone to cure.

I don't have any experience with high end lights as I only used the stock light on the Portrait but I'm going to stick with the stock Evo light until I need something more powerful. Its plenty bright and penetrates to the bottom lighting up all the nooks and crannies. I plan on plenty invertebrates and softies only so I may never need to upgrade..... unless I need some programability and swanky effects like the Current USA Orbit Marine Aquarium LED Light, 18.

Nothing to complain about with this tank at all...yet

5.0 out of 5 stars I love it!
Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2020
Update:

the only problem I've had with the tank is the screw that keeps your bar of LED lights straight & level. The screw is made of plastic (why??), and it strips far too easily. If anyone else needs a new screw, it's Metric size 5 x 0.80. :)

Original review:

I absolutely love my new tank!! My fish are happy in the nice current that the filtration system provides.

It’s easy to switch from daytime to nighttime lighting — just touch a small 1-inch square on the overhead light.

My pictures don’t show much of a difference (one is day light, the other is night light), but in front of the tank, you see a clear, strong 11,000K white and blue daytime light, and then the night light is a subdued blue that’s not too strong on the eyes in the evening.

This tank has fixed the issues that were present in the Fluval Edge (a tank that’s so bad, I decided to throw it out instead of resell it; I’ve had it for years, and I don’t wish that frustration on any other enthusiast).

In short: it’s the best small, saltwater tank on the market!

4.0 out of 5 stars Neat, but needs a few upgraded
Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2020
Update:136 days in, been more of an experimental tank, no fish yet... 2 hermits. Used a dead shrimp to cycle, and feeding the tank pellets every so often to keep the BB thriving. Have had a coraline algae outbreak which is great. No water changes until day 136 when i did a massive water change to prep for adding a fish in a week or two. Coraline growth usually means you are safe to add corals, so if youre worried about the stock light, dont be.

A pretty neat "all in one" setup, but flawed in a few ways. The return pump is way under powered. The common fix for this is swapping in the cobalt mj606 pump, but this is currently unavailable on Amazon and other large retailers... looks to be discontinued. Secondly they have a relief cut a few inches from the bottom to insure the pump can get water, but i find the pump mainly pulls water thru here completely bypassing the media in chamber one. I used superglue and a piece of plastic cup to seal it off, others have used silicone.

Other than that, its a great little setup.
