Product Description
Dubia Roach Colony Setup! For Illustration Purposes ONLY
Starting a Dubia Roach Colony
"Are you interested in starting your very own feeder insect colony? Whether you need feeder insect food or a feeder insect breeder colony, we've got you covered with this comprehensive guide.
Feeder Insect Colony Setup Guide Equipment You'll Need:
- A 20-gallon tub or container – perfect for housing your feeder insect colony. Make sure to get a tub with a secure cover to keep your insects safe.
- Ventilation – Ensure proper airflow by using a hot soldering iron to make ventilation holes along the sides of the tub near the top. Alternatively, you can cut a hole, at least 6″x6″, in the cover and glue a piece of screen on it. Adequate ventilation will also help maintain a dry environment, essential for good feeder insect care.
- Heating – Feeder insects thrive at around 90°F (32°C). Achieve this temperature with an adhesive under-tank heater, heat cable, or a ceramic heat emitter. Always use a thermostat or a lamp dimmer with the heater to avoid overheating your insects or damaging the plastic container.
- Insect accommodations – Insects need places to stand, so they don't crush each other. Egg crates, like those you'd find with feeder insect breeding kits, are ideal. Avoid using cartons as they may be treated with chemicals harmful to insects.
- Food – Feeder insect chow or insect food, such as "insect chow" included in feeder insect colony starter kits, is perfect for gut loading your insects. Place it in a small lid in the corner of the tub.
- Water – Keep in mind that insects can drown in standing water. Use water crystals, often included with feeder insect food kits, and place them in a shallow bowl.
Getting Your Insects:
Now that you have your enclosure, heating, egg crates, food, and water set up, it's time to get your feeder insects. Start by searching for "feeder insects" from a reputable dealer. Make sure to select medium-sized insects, as they are typically young and in top breeding condition. A successful colony usually has more females than males because one male can impregnate multiple females. Aim to start with at least 20 insects, consisting of 5 male insects with full wings and 15 females with wing stubs only. You're now ready to start your feeder insect colony! Place the enclosure in a quiet, dark place, provide regular food and water, and remember to clean out the enclosure every 1-2 weeks to maintain a healthy colony. Whether you're looking for feeder insect food, a feeder insect breeding kit, or anything else related to feeder insect care, this guide will set you on the right path."
Premium Blend of Ingredients to Feed Your Dubia Roaches
Promoting the health and hydration of your Dubia roaches is key to a thriving colony, ensuring excellent nutrition for the animals that consume them. Avoid high-protein foods like dog or cat food and meat, as excess protein can convert to uric acid, potentially harming reptiles.
Here are the ingredients typically found in Dubia roach food from G&T Country Living:
Ingredients:
- Ground Corn, Soybean Meal, Alfalfa, Wheat, Oats
- Feed Lime (Calcium)
- Dry Molasses
Feeding Tips: Keep the feed bowl full, clean it regularly, and remove excess food weekly to prevent mold, which can be lethal to roach colonies. By following these guidelines, you'll maintain a healthy Dubia roach colony and provide nutritious food for your animals.
Watergel Granules to Hydrate Your dubia Roaches Without drowning Your Little Friend
Water crystals, a long-standing solution, are crafted from a non-toxic, highly absorbent polymer with the remarkable ability to soak up moisture many times its own dry weight. These crystals have an extended lifespan, offering a practical choice for maintaining proper hydration.
In your Dubia roach colony, it's crucial to steer clear of excess moisture and dirty water as these can lead to mold formation, which is detrimental. To prepare your Water Gel, you'll find clear instructions on the packet. To ensure it remains effective, remember to store any excess in a sealed container to prevent it from drying out.
With your kit, we've thoughtfully included one 1-ounce packet of water gel granules. Each ounce can produce approximately 1 gallon of gel when mixed with water. This means your kit provides enough material to prepare approx. 1 gallonsof gel, ensuring a safe and controlled source of moisture for your roaches and other insects, eliminating the risk of drowning them.
Egg Flats, Great for Housing your Dubia Roaches
To create a secure and accommodating habitat for Dubia roaches in plastic containers or aquariums, follow these guidelines:
- Egg Flats: Place 12x12-inch egg flats inside for roaches to hide and climb. Alternate their orientation for variety and easy cleanup.
- Container Design: Ensure smooth-sided containers to prevent escape, even though roaches are not natural climbers.
- Covering the Enclosure: Use mesh screen covers for aquariums or heavy-duty plastic covers for plastic tubs. For ventilation, cut a 6x6-inch hole in the tub cover and attach vinyl mesh with hot glue.
These steps provide a safe, well-ventilated environment for your Dubia roaches. Ensure the container is sanitized and appropriately sized.

You want plenty of ventilation on your container, if you don’t have enough it’s going to start stinking and the such.
We first just tried getting a bunch of roaches from the pet store to see if they would start breeding. Bad idea they only sell the females there. So you need to get the ones they sell here in pairs. One male can breed up to 4 females I think. The ones that are sold here in 1-2 females is good.
Despite this issue, however, I am happy with my purchase overall. The kit includes a pound of feeder roaches, which is more than enough to get me started and keep me going for quite a while. The roaches themselves seem to be healthy and active, and I feel good knowing that I am providing my pet with quality feeder food that I can rely on.
Overall, I would recommend the G&T Country Living Dubia Roach Colony Starter Kit to anyone who is looking to raise their own roaches for feeding purposes. Just be aware that you may need to do some research on your own in order to get started properly. But, once you're up and running, you'll have a reliable source of feeder food that you can feel good about using for your pet.
The dishes make it so easy to clean and provide fresh feed more often
